Dichroic filters
Dichroic filters typically perform their function by coating an optical substrate with multiple layers of thin films of different materials. The thickness and refractive index of these films are carefully designed to use the principle of light interference so that light in a specific wavelength range is transmitted and light in other wavelength ranges is reflected. For example, for a dichroic filter designed to separate red and blue light, the thin film structure allows the red light to pass through and the blue light to be reflected.
